History As early as 3000 BC, carvings of dogs on Egyptian tombs depict the Great Dane. Evidence exists of a Dane-like dog for fighting and hunting. Although the Dane we know now comes from Europe in the 1800's. In 1876 it was declared the national breed of Germany. Danes from then are very diffrent from the Danes we know of today. The breed has now become a companion and estate guard dog.
Temperment Today Great Danes have a loving and gentle temperment, if they are bred correctly, and make great companions to families. Danes have been called "The Gentle Giant" and their primary asset is the desire to please so it's very important that your puppy be well socialized. Danes do well in the house and do not do well as yard dogs. They are playful, sweet, and are patient with children. Danes are not agressive unless circumstances require it. They do not bark much but are great watch dogs.

Health Prone to bloat, tumors, heart disease and tail injuries. Hip displasia is common as well. They should go on a long walk daily to get plenty of exercise. Life expectancy is normally 10 years but many live to be 12-13 years.
Grooming Danes are easy to groom. They have a smooth, short hair so just a bristle brush and dry shampoo when necessary. They are an average shedder and nails need to be kept trimmed. Because of their size, bathing is usually a chore so grooming daily is recommended.
